Our verdict

Earn up to 3% cash back as statement credit on select categories, plus an easy to obtain welcome offer.

The $0-annual-fee cashback card that offers bonus rewards at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations and on U.S. online retail. It now features a welcome offer of $200 statement credit after you spend $2,000 on your card in the first 6 months with the new card.

The card’s standout feature is the 3% cash back as statement credit at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. online retail purchases and U.S. gas stations on up to $6,000 per calendar year in purchases in each category, then 1%. While this isn’t the highest rewards rate on the market, it’s simple and effective, especially considering you won't pay an annual fee to use the card.

The card also offers an appreciable new perk: Get $7 back each month after you enroll and use your card to spend $9.99 or more on an eligible subscription to the Disney Bundle. This package includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, and is a sizable discount. Enrollment required.

You'll get 15 months at a 0% intro APR before reverting to 18.74% to 29.74% variable. This helps round out the card's upfront value alongside the intro purchase APR and welcome offer.

Overall, this can be an excellent no-annual-fee cashback card if you spend less than $300 each month on groceries. But if you spend more than that, consider upgrading to the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express to maximize your cash back earning potential.

Pros

  • Intro APR period on purchases and balance transfers. The intro APR on purchases and balance transfers can help with holiday spending or other family needs. Get a 0% intro APR period for 15 months following your account opening. After that, your rate reverts to 18.74% to 29.74% variable.
  • Earn cash back. Earn 3% cash back on U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%. 3% cash back at U.S. gas stations on up to $6,000 per year, then 1%. Plus 3% on U.S. online retail purchases on up to $6,000 per year, then 1% after that. Cash Back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit or at Amazon.com checkout
  • Welcome offers. You'll earn $200 as statement credit when you use your card to make $2,000 in purchases in the first 6 months.

Cons

  • Cap on 3% cashback categories. Your accelerated rates in these categories only last until you spend $6,000 in each category, each year.
  • Foreign transaction fees. You'll pay a 2.7% fee on purchases made abroad.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express benefits

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a well-rounded card with good rewards on everyday purchases. Here’s why you should consider it:

  • No annual fee. This card offers lower rewards than you’ll find with the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, but you won’t have to worry about a yearly cost.
  • Great for every day reward categories. If you’ve had your eye on the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express but thought it was too expensive, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a great alternative. You’ll earn an attractive rewards rate at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. online retail purchases and U.S. gas stations: 3% cash back as statement credit on up to $2,000 in annual qualifying purchases in each category, then 1%. There aren’t many other no-annual-fee choices if you want a similar grocery rewards rate.
  • Monthly statement credits. After enrollment, you can earn $7 back each month when you use your card to spend $9.99 or more on an eligible subscription to the Disney Bundle. This bundle includes Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+. You can also enroll to earn $15 cash back each month on Home Chef purchases, a $180 per year value. Enrollment required.
  • Worthy bonus offer. A welcome offer of $200 statement credit after you spend $2,000 on purchases within 6 months of having the card.
  • Good intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for a rewards card. The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express has a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months after account opening, then 18.74% to 29.74% variable. An intro APR can help you make the purchases you need and pay them off over time without accruing interest.
  • Plan It. The Plan It feature allows you to create payment plans for large purchases. Typically you’d pay a fee of up to 1.33% of the purchase to create this plan, but for the first 15 months of account opening you can create these plans with an intro 0% plan fee. (Terms apply, see rates & fees)
  • Purchase protection. Eligible purchases made using this card are covered by purchase protection, including package theft protection.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express drawbacks

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a well-rounded card without significant weaknesses. Still, there are a few things to watch out for before applying:

  • Think twice before bringing it overseas. The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express has a lower foreign transaction fee than you’ll pay with other cards — 2.7% of each foreign purchase — but it’s still not the best choice when you’re traveling abroad. To be fair, the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express isn’t an outlier. Many of its cashback competitors also charge foreign transaction fees. Beyond foreign transaction fees, the card may have limited acceptance in other countries. While Amex is widely valid internationally, there are some merchants who won’t accept it. If you’re traveling abroad, it’s best to have a backup card, such as a Visa.
  • Annual cap on the bonus categories. The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express can be a great deal if groceries, gas, and online shopping are a substantial part of your monthly expenses. But you’ll only earn 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations and U.S. online retail purchases on the first $6,000 in qualifying purchases every calendar year in each category, after which you’ll earn 1% cash back as statement credit. That $6,000 yearly cap comes out to $500 a month in each category.
  • No reward transfers. Cash back is simple, but it’s often limited in terms of redemption options. For the Blue Cash Everyday, Amex lets you redeem cash back for statement credit, gift cards and merchandise. Statement credit offers the best value, giving you a 1-cent-per-point rate. Unfortunately, you can’t transfer your rewards to travel partners such as airlines or hotels. Some travel cards offer this benefit, giving you lots of redemption flexibility.
  • Top rewards rate applies only to standalone supermarkets. The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express might seem like a good choice for groceries at Walmart or Target. However, Amex is careful to exclude superstores and warehouse clubs from the card’s top rewards rate. To reach the 3% cashback tier, you’ll need to shop at standalone supermarkets.

Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express customer reviews and complaints

Online users generally have good things to say about the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, citing features such as the $0 annual fee, strong everyday rewards and solid intro APR. Users often advise others to get the card for grocery spending. Some note that the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express can be a better choice due to its higher top rewards rate.

How to make the most out of your card

Here’s how you can squeeze as much value out of this card as possible:

  • Qualify for the welcome offer. You have 6 months after getting approved to meet the spending requirement.
  • Pair it with another card. The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express offers good rewards for spending at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations and U.S. online retail, but offers sparse rewards elsewhere. For that reason, you might want to pick up another card that covers this card’s drawbacks.
  • Get as close as possible to your $2,000 yearly caps in the 3% cashback categories. If you don’t spend $2,000 a year in each of these areas, consider what else you need in your daily life that’s available at the supermarket or online — vitamins, cleaning supplies, office supplies, etc.
  • Leverage the intro APR. The card comes with a solid intro APR, so now might be a good moment to make purchases you’ll pay off over a longer period of time. If you do, however, check that you can clear your balance before your intro APR expires. If you don’t, you’ll start accruing interest at the card’s normal APR.
  • Avoid the penalty APR. If you make a late or returned payment, Amex may raise all of your APRs to 29.99% variable. This also means you could lose your intro APR.

Bottom line

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express is a well-rounded product with no annual fee. It offers good rewards on eligible groceries, gas and online purchases. Because you don’t have to pay anything to own the card, you can keep more of your rewards in your pocket.

While it’s an effective card, it doesn’t offer the highest rewards on groceries. Consider other grocery credit cards if you want more options.

How we determined the value of Amex Membership Rewards points

To determine the average value of an Amex Membership Rewards point, we looked at the equivalent dollar value a redemption option would cost in the Amex Membership Rewards program. We calculated this average across all redemption options available through Amex to reach the approximate value you can expect when redeeming these points on average. In this case, the average value of a single Membership Rewards point came out to 2 cents per point.

Remember that your points could be worth more or less depending on what you redeem them on, so this value should be used as a general guide.
